Presentation in Karlovac: Agrometeorological information

At the invitation of the Association of Ecological Producers of the Karlovac County EKOP, in Karlovac, on March 13, 2018, in the hall of city district Turanj, Petra Sviličić mag.phys.-geophys. from the HAgMD held the lecture for about twenty members of the association on a theme Agrometeorological information.

The aim of the lecture was to present the currently available agrometeorological information, which can be found on the web pages of the Meteorological and Hydrological Service, and in general the information that can be used in everyday agricultural practice. Furthermore, a brief analysis of climatic variables for Karlovac was presented to the farmers and, given the guidelines in the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, it was shown how they can protect themselves from the negative impacts that climate change brings with it.

Farmers were surprised by the amount of information available to them. Especially the forecasts of temperature sums (growing degree-days) for which they did not even know they exist on the web page and are of great use in their work. They follow daily forecasts several times a day and rely on different sources. They hope that by expanding the national weather observation network in the future, it will be easier to get the hourly data that is important to them for work planning and protection against weather disasters.

Given the temperature raise and the risk of heat waves during summer, the increased frequency of days with strong and stormy winds in the spring and the moderate vulnerability due to low temperature in the colder part of the year, the farmers have raised awareness on necessity of timely protection of their crops by applying proper agrotechnical measures and adjusting the date of sowing and planting with the realistic conditions on the field.
