AGROMETEOROLOGY IN THE SERVICE TO THE USERS Environmental protection and agriculture

Encouraged by the good experience on the first agrometeorological workshop, entitled "Agrometeorology in the service to the users: Climate change and agriculture" by the Croatian Agro-meteorological society on November 14 2013 in Zagreb, which was held for the agronomic experts from the Agricultural Advisory Service, we are organizing the second agro-meteorological workshop entitled "Environmental protection and agriculture".

The workshop will be held in Dubrovnik on March 22, 2014., in the amphitheater of the University of Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik Paraclete 41, starting at 8:30 am.

The purpose of this workshop is to educate as many direct beneficiaries to whom agrometeorological information is necessary in their activities. The workshop aims to preserve agricultural production in areas with limited management conditions in order to protect natural uniqueness and  landscape, habitats of special plants and animals, and to preserve the environment. Also, the aim is to stop the trend of depopulation, to preserve a rural area, but also to encourage their further development, particularly through the development of tourism in areas that have natural and cultural heritage. Lectures on topics of climate change, extreme weather conditions and agricultural production are focused on olive growers and winemakers, who are well represented in agriculture in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County , and for agronomists, especially from Agricultural Advisory Service, who are in daily contact with farmers. We have provided  lectures by experts from abroad, since  the meeting of the EU project: COST Action ES 1106 Assessment of European Agriculture Water use and trade under climate change ( EURO - AGRIWAT ) will be organized in Dubrovnik just before our workshop. From the Workshop Program, located below,  you will see all the topics which are represented and how many high-quality scientists and experts and also the co-organizers, are involved in the work of this workshop.

Within the agrometeorological workshop, entitled "Environmental protection and Agriculture", lectures lasting 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the topic, will be performed. Presentations include practical examples and interactive communication between speakers and participants. After each section there will be a discussion with an aim to exchange views and also to agrometeorological profession hear the feedback from the users. Thus, communication between lecturers and the participants will enable users to apply their knowledge in practice, and experts to improve and adapt agrometeorological research and information needs of users. Concrete conclusions will be given at the end of the workshop with a view of improving and advancing agrometeorological information to the users for agriculture and protection of forests against fire. Agrometeorological workshop will be followed by the media on TV , radio and / or newspapers and specialized magazines.

This project fulfills these measures from the Environmental Program of the City of Dubrovnik:

• Preservation, protection and sustainable use of the environment, landscape and natural heritage.

• Protection of natural resources and promoting sustainable agriculture.

• Preservation and improvement of rural areas and rural values.

• Improvement of the quality of life in rural areas.

• Enablement of adequate living standard  in rural areas and contribution to the stability of the agricultural income.

We believe that objective agrometeorological informations are essential for the sustainability and development of the rural areas of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Anyhow, we are challenged to start something well for the general welfare of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County and Croatian.
